WELCOME TO URBAN FITNESS AND HEALTH

Urban Fitness and Health was started by fitness and health experts to provide the Skagit Valley with a complete experience of wellness. We brought together a wide variety of exercise concepts including free weights, exercise machines, cardio equipment, group exercise classes, senior fitness programs and a high intensity workout facility. We have also added health services including physical therapy, nutrition counseling, massage therapy and a healthy coffee and juice bar. We offer educational seminars on health-related topics. To ensure a family environment we also offer babysitting services in safe and fun environment.

Kyle

General Manager

Hey there! I can’t wait to meet you! I was born and raised in Skagit Valley, graduated from Burlington-Edison High School (Go Tigers!) and pursued education at Skagit Valley College. I love everything about the Valley we live in and believe that we have a very special community here that I am blessed to be a part of. My passion is to give back to the community and enrich as many lives as possible, beginning with health and fitness. When I’m not around the gym reaching for my goals, and helping others with theirs, you’ll find me somewhere in nature enjoying the beautiful outdoors, or competing in some sort of sport or board game.

Fitness Director

Fitness is my passion and I have the joy of sharing that with others every day. I take this privilege seriously and I do my best to keep my clients, members, and staff accountable to their attainable goals. I am ACE certified and have course certification in early childhood physical education. I have achieved fantastic results for my clients and myself as a coach and trainer with over 10 years experience. I am able to help progress all fitness types. I specialize in functional strength training, youth fitness (I was a PE teacher for preschool-aged students for two years), group fitness, competition prep, sports training, and shoulder injury recovery.

Melissa

Group Exercise

Ace Certified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, and Licensed Massage Practitioner since 1999. Specialized in Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation, Sports Conditioning, Training and Injury Therapy. Youth Sports and Senior Functional Training. Body Make-over Programs and Corporate Functional Training and Injury Prevention. I enjoy running, as a Boston Marathon Qualifier the past four years. Working in the health field for so long, it is a true passion of mine and there’s so much reward to helping others take control of the body they have.

My name is Cam, short for Carmela, born and raised in the Philippines where I began my career as a central supply surgical tech and went on to work as a medical assistant at Yakima Regional Hospital in Eastern Washington. I have always been an active person who appreciates life and every little thing it offers. I consider myself to be a person who always sees the glass half full. I fell in love with strength training about two years before moving here and I still continue to love it more and more to this day. As a wife and mother of two children and two fur babies, I know what it takes to balance life and fitness.

My name is Abby, I have worked at Urban Fitness since 2009. I believe that fitness should be fun and personalized for each person’s abilities and goals. I coached the women’s lean body mass winner in the most recent fitness challenge. I can help all body types enjoy fitness and make progressive strength and functionality gains.

Destiny

Personal Trainer

After being a member for five years and having great success with Urban, I decided to get certified to help others see success. After being mentored by several trainers and fitness directors, I earned my NASM trainer certification and also my women’s nutrition certification. I know what it takes to gain control of your own body composition and what it takes to create body change. I love being able to say “I’ve been there” and helping people discover their passion for fitness.

I have now gone the entire gamut, I am 6’1″ and have weighed as little as 135lbs and as much as 305lbs. Now, I’m a cool 220 and healthier than I have ever been in my life. I decided that after getting my own health back that I was destined to be a trainer. My journey has been awesome and now I get to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for fitness with any and everyone who will allow me to work with them.

I know what it takes to get in shape as a mother and a wife. I have worked at Urban Fitness for about four years as a receptionist and now I am following my passion to teach others fitness. I wrestled for four straight years at Mount Vernon High School and also for Vandit club. I also attended Skagit Valley College where I earned a scholarship to play soccer. I speak Spanish and English fluently and I enjoy bringing fitness to everybody! The way you feel as you’re leaving the gym after a great workout is what I love giving to everyone!

I have 12 years of swim coaching experience in several different gyms. I’m currently taking Brazilian jiu jitsu as self defense, and just for a fun way to do cardio! I’ve spent 7 years as a server watching peoples bad health habits and I’m excited to help people become healthier and get the most out of life!

Personal Trainer / HIIT Coordinator

I have trained for a sport or an athletic event since I was 14 and have been training with a gym since I was 17. Sports are a passion of mine, playing Football throughout high school and basketball my senior year before going on to San Diego State to play basketball. After tearing my MCL, ACL and dislocating my knee cap playing summer league basketball, I withdrew my transfer to Michigan State for football and ended up staying at San Diego state for academics where I took PTA, EMT, and fire science courses. I was also civilian contracted for the military to train soldiers in Fort Bragg North Carolina for one year. I have been a part of fitness centers in several capacities and roles in my training career, and have a passion that drives me to continue doing everything I can to help people reach their goals.

My name is Pelar. Originally from Anacortes, now residing in Burlington with my husband and two children. I’ve been teaching for over 20 years, with 10 of those at Urban. Besides my love for fitness and teaching, I am a licensed massage practitioner who is passionate about helping others feel better.

I am married with a 20-year-old daughter. I work full time for KarMART Nissan as a Service Writer/Advisor. I’ve been teaching at Urban Fitness since June of 2008. My hobbies include cycling, running and taking my two Labradors on hikes. I’m up every day at 2:45 a.m. to hit the gym before work and am in bed by 6:30 p.m. to catch my ZZZ’s. I’m very regimented and have a very busy schedule. My husband works out of town most of the year, so my life is pretty boring unless he’s home, LOL! My favorite part of fitness is the post-workout “high”—that sense of accomplishment and fatigue from a powerful workout.

I was born and raised in Southern California… think Disneyland and sandy beaches! Our family relocated to Washington seven years ago and Urban has become my second family for six years now. Being active is just a natural part of my life whether it’s being a BODYFLOW instructor, working out in the gym, or being in this beautiful area outdoors with our dogs.

My name is Teresa and I’ve lived in Mount Vernon my entire life. I’m married and we have one daughter. I am licensed to teach Zumba, Zumba Step, STRONG by Zumba, and TRX. My favorite part about teaching classes is the energy and passion I get to bring every day and share with my lovely friends in all of my classes.

Hey! I am originally from Buffalo, NY and moved to WA after my father went through flight school and was stationed at NAS Whidbey in 1985. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice from Chapman University. My first love was gymnastics, and I fell in love with the sport while watching Mary Lou Retton compete in the 1984 Olympic Games. I competed for 11 years, officially retiring at 19 and then coached competitive and recreational boys and girls for the next 14 years. In my spare time, I can be found mountain biking, spur pole climbing, gardening, looking for thrift store treasures or spending time with my 15-year old son, Alex. I am definitely an adrenaline junkie and love pushing the envelope when I am able to. I live by the words, “Anything is possible… if you want it bad enough.”

Hello, my name is Yasmin but everyone calls me Yazzy. I was born in California, but I was raised here in Skagit Valley. I enjoy going out on walks and watching movies. One thing I enjoy the absolute most would be food, ask everyone that knows me!  I Like to smile a lot which you can tell in my picture, but I enjoy making other people smile with me whenever I can. I have a son that is 4 years old he is my pride and joy, and motivation to work as hard as I do. I love working here at Urban Fitness.

I’ve worked in the coffee industry for over three years and have always had a dream of running my own shop. I love being able to join the Urban Fitness and Health team to help launch and run the Urban Café.
